Website Review 10/5/18

https://sites.google.com/view/recording-for-teachers/set-ups/choir

I am reviewing the website Recording For Teachers. I am looking specifically at the Set Ups/Choirs. I really like the color scheme of the website because it is easy to read and the colors do not contrast each other. I also like how it is easy to manage the site. There are a lot of links directing me to different topics. The information is very detailed when the links go into a google doc. I like how the links in the google docs are labeled if it is a video. All the external links work.

There were a lot of great things to this website, but there are also somethings that would make it better. I would like to see a bit more information in Live vs. Studio Settings under Live because the information is a bit broad. Some of the titles once you go into the google doc do not line up with the one on the actual website. Maybe try keeping it the same so that the website user does not get confused and it is easier to know what you are reading. For example, under small ensembles the google document says group voice instead put both so that we know that both are used. Define some of the terms that people will not know right away. Reading some of the information confused me because I did not know the terms. A short definition at the bottom of the page could be helpful. On the Things to remember at the bottom of the page, the word ‘and’ was used a lot in one sentence. The paragraph just sounds awkward, maybe try to reword a few things and do not use italicized every sentence. Use it sparingly.

Recording Arrangement Sequence Part 4 Blog: 9/28/18

For this part of the project, I uploaded an mp3 track I had previously recorded on GarageBand, with an audio interface, into Sound Trap. Once I had my mp3 recording in Sound Trap, I had to create new parts that went along with my original melody. In the application, there are many instruments that can be used to make different tracks. I ended up using mostly percussion instruments which I could then choose from a variety of them to pick the sound I wanted. Once I got my song how I wanted it, I had to upload it to SoundCloud which I have never used before. I soon learned how to operate the program. I did not know how to use Sound Trap so something I learned through this process was how to use Sound Trap. I had no clue how to use the application, so I had to figure it out on my own. I played around with the different instrumentations until I got what I wanted. There are many options like drum set, wind instruments, strings, and many more. Something else I need to know is how to operate SoundCloud. I had never used the application, so I had to figure out how to use it. First, I signed up and got an account. Then it was pretty straight forward once you get into SoundCloud. You upload a file from your computer and then you select if you want to publish it public or private.

One thing I liked about my work was the tracks I had added to my original recording. My melody on its own was okay, it was just too simple. Adding the extra tracks I made with the percussion instruments, added some character to the song. A challenge I experienced in this project was that my melody was not in time so trying to add in extra tracks was a bit hard at times. When I added the metronome to the tracks, my melody slowed down a bit because I was still trying to figure out how to play it.  I had to rerecord a lot with my extra tracks until I finally got what I wanted. After I recorded, I saved my song. All the tracks I had made, got deleted. I was frustrated at this point and I wanted to give up. I had to remember all the extra tracks I added and rerecord them. I finally ended up getting what I wanted and made sure it saved correctly. The next steps I would take if I had more time would be to record my short melody again so that it is more in time and easier to add extra tracks to it. I would also try to line up the tracks better and even try to add more parts that are not just percussion.

TPACK is a theory that teachers should use technology in the classroom that will help the students out in the learning environment and not just use projectors in the classroom. They should be using extra applications related to their field. TPACK’s relation to part one of this project would be to have the kids help the teacher create a melody or rhythm in a composing website (Sibelius, flat.io, etc.). The melody would not have to be super long, it is just to get the students involved and help them identify rhythm and notation. To relate it to part two, the teacher could have all the student play the melody they created and have them all play it in unison. In relation to part three, the teacher could have the students all make their own part on SoundTrap or just collaboratively make a few tracks that will go along with the prerecorded track.

The National Core Arts Standards are a framework that helps guide educators in the arts that a student should attain by the end of a certain time period. The core arts standards that relate to parts one through three are: anchor core standard #1, #2, #3, #5, #8, #10. Part one relates to anchor core standard numbers one through three because in this stage of the project we had to develop ideas for a melody and refine them so that we can have them for the next part. For part two of the project, anchor core standard numbers five and ten relate to the project because in this part we had to use previous knowledge and experience to refine our skills to be able to play and record the melody that we created. In part 3 of this project, anchor core project numbers one, two, three, five, eight, and ten all relate because we needed to have previous knowledge along with new ideas to create a track that included that recorded we did in the previous parts. I can apply these in future teaching by making sure that I can a least keep a few of the standards in my classroom so that my students are receiving quality information that will help them in their education.

Technology in the Music Classroom Blog: 9/14/18

http://www.jesserathgeber.com/blog

I used a blog from Jesse Rathgeber where he uses a programming tool from MIT Media Lab called Scratch. This program allows kids along with adults to create projects that include animations, games, music, and many more. This program is so easy to use that even a kindergartner can do it. Although the program is not entirely related to music, some of those elements can be used to make a project involving music. Jesse even has some directions on how to use the program, Scratch, to create a project using sound and movement on a webcam.

The program Scratch would be a neat way of getting kids involved in the classroom. In this generation, everyone has some sort of technology so it would be nice if we could incorporate that in the classroom. I have noticed that kids younger than I could probably be able to figure this program out better because they have been surrounded by technology since they were really small. I like how Jesse used the program because many kids can understand sound and movement. If you tell them to clap or make a sound on count two, they would be very confused. If you tell a kid to make a sound or movement to play a game, they would understand that in a heartbeat. This program would allow teachers to have some games in the classroom because with technology, kids are always wanting to play a game. By having games for them, they will have motivation to finish or do an assignment. The only hard part would be trying to get the technology in the classroom to be able to use the program. With my experience in the a Title one school, it is very hard to get the money for those extra kinds of tools.

Music Technology Blog Post: 8/31/18

Blog Post 8/31/2018

For a project that we had assigned for our class, the directions instructed us to go to SoundCloud and record a short melody that we had created. The day we were working on the assignment, the application SoundCloud was not downloaded on our computers therefore we were not able to use it. We were all forced to find a different application that could do the same thing as SoundCloud. I had no clue what SoundCloud was, so I had to Google searched SoundCloud. I found out that SoundCloud was an arrangement/composition website.

I have experience with some composition websites like Finale, Sibelius, Musescore, and Noteflight. I decided to work with Sibelius since that is the one program that I have the most experience and schooling on. That same website needed some way to record which Sibelius has along with the elements of being able to compose. It took me a little to get use to the program because I had not used it in a few months, but I was able to write the short melody that I was assigned and also record into the program.

After doing the first part of this assignment, with some complications, I realized that I can relate it to a classroom setting. Not all the time will your plans go accordingly. Sometimes technology will fail or even lesson plans, and you will have to improvise in the classroom. Being able to change up plans last minute will help a teacher be more comfortable with changing things up. Also having some knowledge on different programs/applications that do the same thing will help a lot in the classroom because if one fails then there is a backup plan.

Music Education Plans: Blog 8/20/18

Lizeth Gil
I am hoping to graduate from Arizona State University in 2020 to become a music
educator. I would like to teach band to middle school and junior high. I always knew that I wanted to become a teacher, but I did not know in what area until I found my passion for music. I also want to teach private lessons on my primary instrument, clarinet. Someday I want to teach high school, but not after teaching middle school and junior high for a while.

The reason why I want to teach middle school and junior high band is because I want them to be prepared for high school. I did not have the greatest experience in band which almost caused me to quit band completely. I want them to learn how to read music, read rhythms, how to play their instruments, and make music so that they do not struggle in the future. Young people can do all of that and also learn how to be good people if their educators push them and believe in them. I am willing to stay after school or during my lunch to help my kids become better people and better musicians.
